The ring was answered by a friendly female voice, who welcomed us inside with a press of the buzzer to open the wooden door and told us where to go. We went through the door in the wall and wow, just wow. It was exactly how we imagined a historic chateau to be like in rural France (our first time at exploring France properly). The place is simply stunning. Over on the far side of the building we saw a lady ready to greet us, our French is very basic and after conversing in English she set up the little radios / phone like devices for us to have a walk round the grounds and a map of where to go / places to see and the corresponding voice lesson on the device.
Beautiful. The place is simply stunning. the fruit garden is something we can only dream of in the UK, and after we had finished our walk round (about 45 minutes), we asked if we could get a bite to eat / drinks. We saw on the Orangry a taster menu of some description and enquired if we could have that. No problem, but it wouldn't be exactly like the menu if that was OK? but they would improvise and bring us some courses out to try. Again, no problem and we sat in the shade, looking at this beautiful building that we had learnt so much about who had stayed there, and took it all in - a far cry from cold, rainy Wales 48 hours earlier.
The first course came out which was basically potatoes and beetroot - admittedly it was a little more than that, but oh my goodness gracious me, the taste and flavours were delicious. The home squashed apple juice was so nice and refreshing. The next course the same, as well as final dessert course (home-made ice cream with fruits and other stuff that I can't remember except it was divine). We were told that everything ingredient wise was from within the walls of the garden, and (we think it was the son, but not sure) walked past with a basket of fresh figs he had just picked and we were offered to try some - forget Asda and Tesco, these had so much taste to them we were in heaven. All of the food was delicious, we could have eaten 3 times on each course and all the better for being all homemade and hand picked. A nice touch was the recycled pots for eating out of / plates so doing their bit for the environment. As we made to leave, we bought some produce that they sell there, again all homemade and with everything from the garden. We had a bottle of wine (fizzy - not sure if it's champagne region but no doubt I will be corrected, forgive my ignorance), and a few jars of honey. The honey only lasted a few days, alongside the fudge but we managed to restrain and save the wine for Christmas this year - but we have no reservations that it will be good.
We had a wonderful time and we made a forever memory that day which will stay with myself and Rita, thank you so much for your hospitality and generosity while we were there, plus the food was simply to die for - highly recommended.
If you are passing make a detour to this place, it is so worth it. Recommend booking in busy periods.
